Many communities nation wide are having sneak previews of the soon-to-be-released documentary film, The Business of Being Born. This documentary, produced by Ricki Lake and directed by Abby Epstein, features prominent birth authorities such as Dr. Michel Odent, Dr. Robbie Davis-Floyd PhD, Dr. Marsden Wagner and Ina May Gaskin. The CDC estimates that from 1991 to 1999, the maternal mortality ratio was approximately 12 per 100,000 live births. A statisically significant increase in the ratio was seen from 10.3 in 1991 to 13.2 in 1999. The Healthy People 2000 Initiative aimed to reduce the number to 3.3 but the goal was not achieved and has been reset for 2010.
